We’re digging into another superfood today, and this one is really unique - you may have never heard of it before! It’s called L-theanine and it is definitely a super ingredient! It is commonly found in both black and green tea leaves, as well as some mushroom varieties. Keep reading to see what this powerful plant extract can do for your pup!
L-theanine is best known for its calming properties. It’s known to increase serotonin & dopamine(hormones known for controlling mood, sleep cycles, and much more!) One of the best things about this amino acid is that it doesn’t cause drowsiness when increasing relaxation. It’s known to be a very safe supplement with a low risk of side effects.
Approximately 23 million dogs in the USstruggle with anxiety. Common signs of dog anxiety include:
-hiding
-shaking or trembling
-excessive barking
-inappropriate urination
-excessive drooling
-hypervigilance
-attention seeking
-pacing
-excessive licking
Some dogs suffer from more generalized anxiety while others may only have anxiety during specific circumstances. Some common causes of anxiety can be:
being left alone (separation anxiety), travelling, loud noises (thunderstorms and fireworks are especially frequent ones), and changes such as the loss of a family member or a new baby or pet. Just like people, some dogs are more sensitive than others.
L-theanine reduces anxiety, which has been shown through an increase of alpha waves. Alpha waves are signifiers of calmness. It is also known for increasing GABA. GABA (gamma-Aminobutyric acid) is an inhibitory neurotransmitter. This means it blocks certain brain signals - specifically blocking excitation and allowing for calming receptors. Since L-theanine allows your pup to be more calm and relaxed, as well as increasing serotonin and dopamine, it can also lead to a more restful sleep!
Fun fact:
L-theanine was first found in tea leaves in 1949 by Japanese scientists. If you also suffer from anxious feelings, l-theanine can help you, too! It’s great for humans and dogs alike
